Freshman Research Scholars

The Robberson Trust and OSU provide support for the Freshman Research Scholars program for approximately 60 outstanding freshmen entering OSU. Each year, $800 one-year scholarships are given to undergraduate student scholar-researchers to allow them an exceptional opportunity to learn about the research process and participate in conducting research projects with some of OSU's most respected faculty researchers.

Josh Ward
At OSU there is a sense of family.  This family of scholars, faculty, administrators and donors unlocks countless doors and opportunities.  The OSU environment promotes research and extracurricular activities in an uplifting, encouraging manner.

Renee Hale
I always knew I would come to OSU because of my family roots.  Even though I come from a family of mechanical engineers, I was eventually drawn to chemical engineering, and OSU's reputation as an engineering school makes it the logical choice.

The Freshman Research Scholars Program

The Freshman Research Scholars program provides a unique opportunity for approximately 60 bright, ambitious freshmen to elevate their educational experience. Scholars receive a $800 scholarship for two semesters of an academic year (fall and spring). During the first semester scholars learn research skills in an orientation class. In the spring semester, they are matched with a faculty mentor and undertake their own research projects.

During the spring semester Freshman Research Scholars must attend a workshop on giving effective research presentations and are honored a reception at the end of the year where they are encouraged to present their work. A short report detailing their research experience is also required at the end of the year.

Who is eligible to apply?

Freshman Research Scholarships are limited to incoming freshmen. Generally students with a high grade point average and an ACT score of 30 or higher (or SAT equivalent) are most competitive. However, students who demonstrate a high level of analytical ability, intellectual curiosity or motivation are encouraged to apply. We are especially seeking qualified students from under-represented groups. Previous research experience is helpful but not required.

TO APPLY, PLEASE...

1.  Complete the application form, including the student information and research interest questions;

2.  Include a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor familiar with your work describing why you should be admitted to the Freshman Research Scholars program in a sealed envelope signed across the seal; (Unless otherwise arranged, the letter is assumed confidential and not available to persons other than the screening committee)

3.  Return the materials to the Office of Scholar Development and Recognition, 260 Student Union, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078 by March 1, 2007 for full consideration.
